Overview
Katie Winter is an architectural practice that brings the discipline of architecture to issues, communities and projects that are often overlooked. The firm is interested in the process of architecture and in bringing that process to projects and programs that have not often been the focus of that lens.
Collaboration
Collaboration is fundamental to the practice. Working collaboratively with the client, other designers, architects, landscape architects, contractors, and engineers, the firm seeks to bring the best possible team together for each job. The collaborative method not only brings the right expertise to each project but also lets the firm work on a wide range of project types. This methodology allows the firm to bring a fresh eye to each project and at the same time provide the client with the specialized knowledge that the project requires. Collaboration also creates a practice that has experience in a wide range of endeavors and thus is able to carry over ideas from one area to another. For instance, the practice is currently designing a library that has an articulated ground plane more characteristic of a landscape.
Process
Research, analysis and investigation are an important part of the design process. The practice is also actively involved in the construction phase and believes that the period of construction is as much part of the design process as creating the drawings. The site itself and the active involvement of the construction team also play important roles in creating the unique character of every project.
